Mogensen, J39 set of 6, 1947

The J39 chair was designed in 1947 and conceived to be a simple and everyday design.

Intended for domestic use as much as for churches and institutions, the chair became affectionately known as the ‘People’s Chair’. The construction of vertical and horizontal wooden dowels is softened with curved plywood back and hand-woven seat. As head of design for Danish Cooperative FDB, the versatile design formed part of a directive for endorsing modernist design through accessibility. Mogensen set up his own studio in 1950 and the F39 design was later produced by Fredericia.

Mogensen trained under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The principle of simple and functional design echoes in his prolific output over an influential career. Seen as one of the most important furniture designers of the twentieth century, much of his work continues to be produced.

Set of six chairs in oak.

Patina to frames and some marks to woven seat
