James Leonard Esavian chest, 1950

James Leonard Esavian chest c.1950

Chest of drawers designed for Educational Supply Association, a forwarding thinking British manufacturer and supplier for schools and institutions. The solid beech construction was designed to be wholly functional and low cost. The simple repeat pattern of drawers with elliptical cut-outs becomes a modern decorative relief.

The partnership of James Leonard and Esavian is well documented through his earlier furniture designs in cast aluminium from 1948. The innovative production process of this range predates Prouve’s Compass series, which although similar in aesthetic utilised folded steel. Leonard’s aluminium-framed chairs, tables and desks in were published in Domus and several international design journals.

As with much institutional and educational furniture, little survives and good examples are scarce.

Dimensions:
120w x 35d x 70cmh
